The Sarasota area has a long history as the winter training home of many Major League Baseball teams. The Baltimore Orioles hold their annual Spring Training at Ed Smith Stadium. The Pittsburg Pirates are just up the road in Bradenton.

Sarasota is also home to a number of very popular annual events that draw visitors from across the country. Among them are the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix  over July 4th weekend, Thunder by the Bay motorcycle festival in January, Suncoast BBQ and Bluegrass Bash in April.

Sarasota is home to dozens of golf courses including a short 9 hole course to courses that have hosted PGA tour events.
